Zinc-Aluminium-Magnesium (Zn-Al-Mg) coated steel represents a significant advancement in corrosion-resistant materials. It is carbon steel coated with a specialized alloy of zinc, aluminium, and magnesium, applied through a hot-dip process . This “third-generation” coating is engineered to overcome the limitations of traditional galvanized (pure zinc) and Aluzinc (aluminium-zinc) coatings, offering a superior and longer-lasting protection.
SUPERIOR CORROSION RESISTANCE
The addition of magnesium dramatically improves performance, especially in harsh environments. In standardized salt spray tests, Zn-Al-Mg coatings can last 5 to 10 times longer than traditional galvanized steel before red rust appears . It offers excellent resistance in chloride-rich (coastal) and ammonia-rich (agricultural) environments.
UNIQUE "SELF-HEALING" PROPERTY
When the steel is cut, drilled, or scratched, the magnesium in the coating reacts with moisture to form a protective compound. This thin, stable film spreads over the exposed bare steel, effectively "healing" the damaged area and preventing corrosion from spreading.
EXTENDED CUT-EDGE PROTECTION
Traditional coatings often fail at cut edges, where the steel is most vulnerable. The self-healing properties of Zn-Al-Mg coatings is particularly effective here, providing long-term protection to cut edges and drilled holes without the need for additional touch-ups or paints.
ENHANCED DURABILITY WITH THINNER COATINGS
The high level of protection means that a thinner Zn-Al-Mg coating can achieve the same or better corrosion resistance than a much heavier traditional zinc coating. For instance, a ZM310 coating can match the performance of a Z600 heavy-duty galvanized coating. This offers material efficiency and can reduce weight.
EXCELLENT FORMABILITY AND WELDABILITY
Despite its enhanced hardness and corrosion resistance, the coating is designed to withstand conventional processing operations. It can be bent, profiled, stamped, and welded using techniques similar to those for standard galvanized steel, often with the benefit of reduced powdering during forming.
